Glen Moray, founded in 1897 on the River Lossie and owned by La Martiniquaise, has made its name on exactly this kind of affordable cask experiment.
Bottled at 80 proof, it pours a copper-penny hue and offers fig, date and raisin on the nose with leather and dark chocolate, then a fruity palate of currant, blackberry and maraschino cherry balanced by buttery biscuit sweetness, finishing smooth and gently warming. Whiskey Fellow made it his top recommendation of the range and Scotch & Sheen called it the clear winner. A remarkable amount of port-finished character for the money and an easy crowd-pleaser.
