Inu A Kena put Bacardí's Havana Club Añejo Blanco head to head with the Cuban original — and the Puerto Rican won, by a hair. This is the other Havana Club: the Arechabala family created the brand in Cuba in 1934; after the revolution seized their distillery, Ramón Arechabala transcribed the recipe by hand and gave it to the Bacardís, who'd fled to Puerto Rico. Bacardí owns the US rights, Pernod Ricard sells the Cuban version everywhere else, and the two have fought over the name for decades — which is why this bottle says Puerto Rican Rum in large letters. Añejo Blanco is Puerto Rican column rum aged in ex-bourbon oak and charcoal-filtered to clear, bottled at 40% ABV with the Arechabala family crest in place of the Bacardí bat. Rum Ratings' drinkers are unusually warm: much better than standard Bacardí, more flavorful than Don Q Cristal side by side, greatly preferred in a Daiquiri, and the one they'd choose over and over for a budget mixing rum — one suggested Bacardí should replace its standard white with this recipe. Expect a clean nose of cane and light vanilla with a touch of the aging's roundness, opening into a smooth, slightly fuller palate than a typical white with a faint acetone bite, finishing crisp.
