Herradura 150 Aniversario Extra Anejo Tequila
Herradura's 150 Aniversario is an extra añejo aged in a two-step ritual — the house describes a lavish bouquet of smoked wood, caramel, and vanilla — released to mark a century and a half at the hacienda. Félix López registered Hacienda San José del Refugio as a tequila producer in 1870 in Amatitán, beneath the Tequila volcano; the hacienda is still the distillery, NOM 1119, and Brown-Forman has owned it since 2007, keeping the clay hornos, the wild-yeast fermentation, and 25 million agaves in the ground — every one descended from Félix López's original plantings. Herradura made the world's first extra añejo, Selección Suprema, and the 150 Aniversario is the anniversary edition of that tradition: 100% estate-grown blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in clay ovens, fermented naturally with wild yeast, double-distilled, aged more than three years in two stages of oak, and bottled at 40% ABV in a commemorative presentation; check your bottle for the release details. Expect a deep amber pour with a nose of smoked oak, caramel, vanilla, and dried fruit over cooked agave, opening into a rich, silky palate of butterscotch, cocoa, toasted almond, and baking spice with a long, elegant finish. Honest note: a limited anniversary extra añejo from the house that invented the category — for the collector, the Cognac drinker, and the gift with a date on it. Neat, in a snifter, slowly. One hundred fifty years of the horseshoe.
