Herradura Reposado Tequila
Herradura invented the reposado category in 1974 — the world's first 100% agave reposado — and still rests it eleven months, more than five times the legal minimum. Félix López registered Hacienda San José del Refugio as a tequila producer in 1870 in Amatitán, beneath the Tequila volcano; the hacienda is still the distillery, NOM 1119, and Brown-Forman has owned it since 2007, keeping the clay hornos, the wild-yeast fermentation, and 25 million agaves in the ground. The Reposado is 100% estate-grown blue Weber agave from Amatitán and Nayarit, slow-cooked in clay ovens, fermented naturally with wild yeast, double-distilled, aged eleven months in American oak, and bottled at 40% ABV in the squat horseshoe bottle. The house: a pioneer reposado with rich amber hues and a palate of buttery agave and soft spice. Total Wine: copper-colored, cooked agave, vanilla, and butter with a smooth, sweet finish and a touch of spice. Eleven months is añejo territory by most houses' math: expect cooked agave, vanilla, butter, and caramel with a light oak spice, a rounder body than most reposados, and a warm, moderately long finish. Honest note: the original reposado, and still one of the best-value oak-forward ones — sweeter and woodier than the enthusiast bottles, and the one that made the category. For a reposado Margarita, on the rocks, or neat. The horseshoe, rested.
