Highclere Castle London Dry Gin is made in partnership with the Hampshire estate famous as the setting of Downton Abbey. The recipe was inspired by a "Highclere Style" cocktail found in the family archives from the early 1900s, and juniper has grown wild on the property since Roman times. The botanicals are juniper, lavender, lime flower, orange peel, angelica root, cassia bark, cardamom and oats grown on the estate, bottled at 43.5% ABV (87 proof).
Drinkhacker rated it a B+ and described a restrained nose of juniper and earthy angelica, a palate where juniper leads with orange peel, grapefruit and lemon oil, and a finish with mushroom-like angelica and a cereal quality from the oats. The reviewer called it a very mild, versatile gin, which is exactly the point: it is built for a classic G&T with orange and rosemary, or a clean, elegant martini.
