The 2024 Reserva de la Familia comes in a box painted by Ana Pellicer — the Cuervo family's private-reserve extra añejo, in the year's artist edition. Reserva de la Familia is the world's first extra añejo, kept as a family secret for ten generations and released in 1995 for the 200th anniversary of the first tequila license; every year since, a different Mexican artist designs the wooden box, and the 2024 edition is Pellicer's. It's made apart from the rest of the house at La Rojeña, NOM 1122 — the oldest working distillery in the Americas — in copper pot stills, from eight-to-ten-year organic agave grown in the estate's richest volcanic soil, roasted seventy-two hours in masonry ovens, aged more than three years in small new American and French oak barrels charred at different levels, married with family reserves aged up to thirty years, blended by master distiller Alex Coronado, and hand-bottled, numbered, and wax-sealed at 40% ABV. Drinkhacker, reviewing the 2024 release, remarked on spice as the core of the tequila.
