Todd Leopold of Leopold Bros in Denver, Colorado reconstructed a three-chamber still from historical manuscripts, the first of its kind since before Prohibition, and uses it to make a heavy, oily, aromatic rye from 80% Abruzzi heritage rye and 20% barley floor-malted at the distillery.
Where the standard release is a small batch, the Single Barrel 2022 comes from one cask, bottled in bond at 100 proof. Breaking Bourbon rated the 2022 Three Chamber Rye 4 out of 5, describing floral, creamy malt, ripe white peaches and cream with cinnamon and white pepper on the nose, rye spice balanced by orange slices, vanilla and caramel on a rich, creamy palate, and a finish of cinnamon bark and rye spice, praising a profile that blazes its own trail among American ryes.
