Bill Samuels Sr. founded Maker's Mark in 1953 at Star Hill Farm in Loretto, Kentucky, replacing rye with soft red winter wheat — roughly 70% corn, 16% wheat, 14% malted barley — after baking bread with each grain bill to find the one that wasn't bitter; his wife Margie designed the bottle and dipped the first one in red wax. The 101 is the same whiskey as the standard bottle — wheated, entered into the barrel at a low 110 proof, aged around six years and rotated by hand through the warehouses — bottled at 101 proof rather than 90.
