An old man told the founders that the future of mezcal would have to be a union — so they named the company that and built it as a cooperative of Oaxacan producer families rather than a single palenque. Mezcal Unión is one of the most-poured cocktail mezcals in the US and Mexico; Pedro Hernández is the master mezcalero, but each bottle comes from a union of families, and since 2021 the brand belongs to Diageo. Uno is an ensamble of farm-grown espadín and wild cirial — a karwinskii agave — from plants eight to fourteen years old, roasted four days in an earthen pit, fermented, double-distilled, and married in a solera for consistency, bottled at 40% ABV. Drinkhacker gave it a B+: sweet and classically smoky on the nose with heavy citrus, then smoky barbecue sauce, black pepper, smoked beef, citrus peel, and green herbs, a short finish with lingering smoke and salt — soft, easygoing, wholly approachable. Unión's notes: pear, green applewood, smoke, and wet soil, then encino oak firewood, pear, green apple, and citrus. Mezcal Reviews' tasters call it a great intro mezcal, pleasant and easy, and note the price is right. Honest note: it's a big-volume, 40% cocktail mezcal built for consistency, not a wild single-maestro sipper.
