Michter's invented the toasted-barrel bourbon category in 2014, and the 2024 US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish is the tenth-anniversary release — Drinkhacker gave it an A- and called it still the standard-bearer of everything it inspired. Michter's traces its name to Shenk's, the 1753 Pennsylvania distillery; Joseph Magliocco revived the brand in Kentucky, and master distiller Dan McKee runs the most expensive process in bourbon — 103-proof barrel entry, custom toasted-then-charred barrels, and heat-cycled warehouses. Toasted Barrel Finish takes fully matured US*1 Small Batch bourbon and moves it into a second barrel made from eighteen-month air-dried staves that are toasted, not charred — the toast caramelizes the wood sugars without the char's filter — then bottles at 91.4 proof in a limited fall release; batch 24H2817 and its siblings are the 2024 run. Drinkhacker: bold aromatic spice, exotic wood, sandalwood, chocolate-chip cookie, grilled peach, and molasses on the nose; sticky molasses, char-kissed wood sugar, chai spice, coffee, cinnamon sugar, and cooked orchard fruit on the palate; and a warm, gently spiced finish of overcooked apple pie.
