The 2021 Michter's Toasted Barrel Finish is the release reviewers still measure the newer ones against — richer and fuller than the 2024, and now a back vintage of the bourbon that invented the toasted category in 2014. Michter's traces its name to Shenk's, the 1753 Pennsylvania distillery; Joseph Magliocco revived the brand in Kentucky, and master distiller Dan McKee runs the most expensive process in bourbon — 103-proof barrel entry, custom toasted-then-charred barrels, and heat-cycled warehouses. Toasted Barrel Finish takes fully matured US*1 Small Batch bourbon and moves it into a second barrel made from eighteen-month air-dried staves that are toasted, not charred — the toast caramelizes the wood sugars without the char's filter — then bottles at 91.4 proof in a limited fall release. The 2021 tasting: campfire and cinnamon with pecan and candied fruit, and a lingering finish of baked pear, vanilla, and marshmallow. Bourbon Paddy and The Whiskey Reviewer both rated the 2021 among the best in the series, noting a deeper toasted-marshmallow sweetness than later batches; Drinkhacker's 2024 review calls the 2021 fuller-bodied.
