Myers's Original Dark Rum

Myers's is the rum that made Planter's Punch — the original Jamaican dark rum, made since 1879, and the bottle that put the phrase on more bar menus than any other. Frederick Louis Myers created it in Kingston, and it's still produced primarily at Clarendon Distillery in Jamaica: pure Jamaican molasses, fermented and distilled on both continuous column and pot stills, blended, and aged up to four years in white oak, bottled at 40% ABV with the deep, nearly black color that comes from molasses and caramel added after distillation. Sazerac bought the brand in 2018. The house style is rich, dark, and sweet: expect a nose of molasses, brown sugar, and a touch of Jamaican banana funk with a faint licorice note, opening into a full-bodied, sweet palate of dark caramel, treacle, cooked fruit, and a gentle pot-still hogo that keeps it honest, finishing warm and long with molasses. Honest note: this is a bar-well dark rum with added color and a sweet profile, not a cask-strength Jamaican single cask — and it's indispensable anyway, because a Planter's Punch, a Jungle Bird float, or a Mai Tai dark float made with anything else isn't the classic. It's also the rum that Jamaican rum cake, bananas Foster, and a thousand holiday recipes call for by name.
