Sugarcane has grown on Java for thousands of years, and the island's capital, Batavia (today's Jakarta), was where the Dutch East India Company made Batavia Arrack, the cane-and-rice spirit that filled Europe's punch bowls in the 1700s. Naga picks that thread back up with molasses rum distilled on Java and aged in the tropical heat, where the angels take their share fast and the spirit matures in a fraction of the time it would in Scotland or Kentucky. The Siam Edition is the aged flagship: Javanese molasses rum matured ten years in cask, bottled at 40% ABV without chill filtration or added color. A decade in the tropics is a serious amount of maturation, and it shows: acacia honey, dried herbs, and a faint campfire note on the nose, then a rustic, spice-driven palate of allspice, clove, cinnamon, tobacco leaf, caramelized apple, and pineapple over a molasses base, with oak on the finish.
