New Riff Kentucky Wild Gin is distilled in the copper pot at New Riff Distilling in Newport, Kentucky, with twelve botanicals that capture the Ohio Valley: classic European gin ingredients such as angelica, orris and licorice root and three kinds of citrus, plus two farmer-foraged wild Kentucky seasonings, a wild juniper berry and American spicebush, both on the Slow Food Ark of Taste, and a touch of goldenrod, Kentucky's state flower. A dash of New Riff's new-make rye spirit enriches the texture, and it is bottled at 47% ABV (94 proof).
Drinkhacker rated it an A- (9/10), noting peppery juniper, cedar and subtle vanilla on the nose, a dry palate of lavender, flamed lemon peel, peppercorn and red licorice, and a long finish of vanilla bean and lemonade, with the spicebush and licorice staying prominent in a G&T. New Riff waited until its whiskey was ready before releasing a gin, and it shows.
