The 2025 Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year is the newest release of the most sought-after bourbon family in the world — Buffalo Trace's wheated recipe aged ten years and bottled at 107 proof, the only Van Winkle at barrel-adjacent strength. Julian Pappy Van Winkle ran Stitzel-Weller from 1935; his son Julian Jr. kept the Old Rip name alive after the distillery was sold in 1972, and grandson Julian III took the family stocks to Buffalo Trace in 2002, where Sazerac now distills every Van Winkle from the wheated mashbill — roughly 70% corn, 16% wheat, 14% malted barley — it also uses for Weller. The 10 Year is aged in Buffalo Trace's Frankfort warehouses and bottled at 107 proof in the squat bottle; the 2025 release carries the year on the label. The Whiskey Shelf on the 10: dark honey, ripe cherry, orange, cinnamon, clove, and toasted oak — a lot of spice and oak, but not biting — with a finish of honey and oak tannin fading to cinnamon; the reviewer's favorite Buffalo Trace wheater.
