Lot B is the Van Winkle Julian III created in 1991 to show Scotch and Canadian drinkers what mature wheated bourbon tastes like — twelve years, 90.4 proof, in the wine-shaped bottle — and the 2022 release is a back vintage now. Julian Pappy Van Winkle ran Stitzel-Weller from 1935; his grandson Julian III bottled Lot B at the family's Old Commonwealth plant before taking the stocks to Buffalo Trace in 2002, where Sazerac now distills every Van Winkle from the wheated mashbill — roughly 70% corn, 16% wheat, 14% malted barley — it also uses for Weller. Special Reserve is aged twelve years in the Frankfort warehouses and bottled at 90.4 proof; the 2022 release carries the year on the label. Bourbon Culture: rich caramel and berries wrapped around older oak and wood varnish on the nose; sweet and mellow cherry, Tootsie Roll, Cinnabon, anise, and clove on the palate; and a finish of berry jam, caramel hard candy, and lingering oak. Drinkhacker grades the family A-range every year.
