This is Plantation's signature blend — the Grande Terroir edition of the Barbados 5, the rum that Inu A Kena names as the one bottle to buy for a home bar. Plantation — now sold as Planteray after Maison Ferrand's 2023 rename — is the rum arm of the Pierre Ferrand cognac house, built by Alexandre Gabriel on double aging: rum matured in the tropics, then shipped to Charente for a second maturation in ex-cognac casks. This Grande Terroir Signature Blend is Barbados rum from the West Indies Rum Distillery — which Ferrand bought in 2017 — a pot-and-column blend aged in ex-bourbon oak on the island, then finished in Ferrand's cognac casks in France, bottled at 40% ABV in the raffia-wrapped bottle with the terroir-series label. The Lone Caner, reviewing the Barbados Grande Reserve, called it among the best five-year-olds he'd tasted — quietly impressive, the equal of El Dorado 5 and better in places, the double aging giving richness and depth — and traces the bottling's history back to 2008 through several label changes. Expect vanilla, coconut, toffee, banana, and gentle oak with the cognac cask's soft, grapey roundness, smooth and balanced.
