Rhum Clement Cuvee Homere Rhum Agricole Hors d' Age
Cuvée Homère is named for the founder — and it's the top of Clément's standing range, a hors d'âge blend of the estate's oldest rhums. Homère Clément, a doctor and mayor, bought the Domaine de l'Acajou in Martinique in 1887 and, having studied brandy-making in France, began making rhum agricole from fresh cane juice; his son Charles built the distillery in 1917, and today the rhum is distilled at the Simon distillery and aged and blended at Habitation Clément, the estate that's now a museum, gallery, and garden. Cuvée Homère is fresh cane juice distilled on a copper Creole column and aged in the Habitation Clément cellars in a combination of virgin and re-charred oak — hors d'âge under the AOC means a minimum of six years, and Clément's blend draws on older barrels, with Difford's describing the estate's top blends as aged a minimum of ten years — bottled at around 44% ABV with nothing added; check your label. Spirits Review lists it at the top of the estate's age ladder above the XO. A decade of tropical oak on Clément's cane is where French-island rhum becomes something cognac drinkers recognize: expect a nose of dried fig, prune, walnut, leather, tobacco, and rancio over toasted oak, opening into a dense, layered palate of caramel, dark spice, dried fruit, and cocoa with the cane's mineral, faintly vegetal thread still audible, finishing very long and dry. Honest note: a collector's agricole at a collector's price. Neat, slowly, in a snifter. The founder's cuvée. Since 1887.
