Ron Abuelo Anejo Rum
Spirits Review called Ron Abuelo Añejo a great mixing rum for an astonishingly cheap price given the quality. Ron Abuelo — grandfather's rum — is made by Varela Hermanos in Pesé, Panama, where Don José Varela Blanco built the first sugar mill in the newly independent Republic in 1908; the family still grows and mills its own cane, one of the few rum houses that does, distilling on a four-column still and aging in used bourbon white oak. The Añejo Reserva Especial is the entry to the range: a blend of aged rums without a formal age statement — typically around three years — in ex-bourbon American oak, bottled at 40% ABV under the tattered label with the abuelo himself. Expect the house style in its lightest form: a nose of caramel, vanilla, and light honey with a hint of banana and oak, opening into a smooth, clean, medium-light palate with gentle sweetness, a touch of spice, and the dryness that sets Abuelo apart from syrupy Spanish-style rums, finishing short and easy. Honest note: it's a bar-well aged rum built for mixing — the 7 and 12 are where the house sips — and at its price it's one of the best-value gold rums on the shelf. For a Cuba Libre, a Rum and Coke, a Daiquiri with a little oak, a Mojito, a Planter's Punch, or a rum punch for a crowd, it's Panama's house pour. Since 1908.
