Gran Reserva is Santa Teresa's everyday añejo — the workhorse of Venezuela's oldest rum estate. Hacienda Santa Teresa was founded in 1796 in the Aragua Valley, growing cocoa, coffee, and cane, and it's the country's oldest rum producer, still run by the Vollmer family, which also runs Proyecto Alcatraz, the program that turned a gang that broke into the hacienda into a rugby team and a reentry model that's rehabilitated hundreds. Gran Reserva is a blend of molasses rums from the estate's column and pot stills, aged two to five years in ex-bourbon oak in the Aragua heat, and bottled at 40% ABV. It's the base the 1796 grows from: expect a nose of caramel, vanilla, light dried fruit, and a touch of oak, opening into a smooth, medium-bodied palate of toffee, honey, and gentle spice with the dryness that runs through the Santa Teresa house — The Rum Barrel found the flagship not crazy sweet, and the Gran Reserva shares that restraint — finishing warm and moderately long.
