Shenk's Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey 2022 Release
Shenk's Homestead honors the Swiss Mennonite farmer who started distilling in Pennsylvania in 1753 — the origin of what became Michter's — and the 2022 release is a rye-heavy Kentucky sour mash partly matured in toasted French oak, at 91.2 proof. John Shenk's farm distillery became Bomberger's in the 1800s and Michter's in the twentieth century; the modern Louisville Michter's launched the Legacy Series in 2018 with Shenk's and Bomberger's Declaration, one release a year, each a different wood experiment on a sour mash that's neither bourbon nor rye by grain bill. The 2022 Shenk's moved from the Chinquapin oak of 2019 through 2021 to toasted French oak for a portion of the blend, bottled at 91.2 proof. Bourbon Culture: chocolate éclair, baking spice, caramel, and chocolate-covered espresso bean from the French oak, with Golden Grahams, toasted orange peel, fig, and date, and a finish of oak, cigar wrapper, hot chocolate, vanilla cappuccino, and sugar cookie — 7.4 out of 10, thick mouthfeel, French oak chocolate. Bourbon Paddy and Peoples Bourbon Review both note the shift in wood. Honest note: a back vintage of a series collectors buy every year — the French-oak transition year, and the one to compare against the 2023 and 2024. Neat, in a Glencairn. Shenk's, 2022.
