The 2023 Shenk's Homestead is the funky one — Breaking Bourbon gave it 4 out of 5 for a smooth, creamy mouthfeel that nails its funky weirdness and a long, sweet finish of honey, caramel popcorn, and tiramisu. Shenk's honors John Shenk, the Swiss Mennonite farmer who started distilling in Pennsylvania in 1753 — the origin of what became Bomberger's and then Michter's; the modern Louisville Michter's launched the Legacy Series in 2018 with Shenk's and Bomberger's Declaration, one release a year, each a different wood experiment on a rye-heavy Kentucky sour mash that's neither bourbon nor rye by grain bill. The 2023 is bottled at 91.2 proof, the series' constant. Breaking Bourbon: funky oak and cotton candy on the nose; cigar box and aged leather complexity on a creamy palate; and a finish of honey, caramel popcorn, and tiramisu that lingers intently, an earthy undertone fading. Bourbon Culture and Bourbon Paddy both found more depth than the 2022.
