Shenk's honors John Shenk, the Swiss Mennonite farmer who started distilling in Pennsylvania in 1753 — the origin of what became Bomberger's and then Michter's; the modern Louisville Michter's launched the Legacy Series in 2018, one release a year, each a different wood experiment on a sour mash that's neither bourbon nor rye by grain bill. The 2024 uses a mashbill with three types of rye and French oak seasoned two years in the open air, bottled at 91.2 proof. The Whiskey Wash: orange, clove, oak, and earthy mushroom on the nose; a delicate balance of sweet and savory — apricot, mushroom, oak, green apple, baking spice, warm bread, and maple — so well balanced you might not notice you've swallowed.
