Sombra Mezcal Artesanal Reposado
Sombra Reposé is mezcal aged in Bordeaux barrels from Château Léoville Poyferré — which is what happens when a master sommelier owns a mezcal brand. Sombra means shadow; Richard Betts created it in 2006 as a stance against the vodka-ization of agave, and since 2017 it's made at a single company-owned palenque in San Juan del Río in the Oaxacan Sierra from organic espadín grown at up to 8,000 feet, pit-roasted over oak, tahona-crushed, wild-fermented, and copper-distilled. Reposé — French for rested, and a pun on the rosé tint the wine wood gives it — fills the Joven into Limousin oak barrels sourced from the historic St-Julien estate and rests it up to six months, bottled at around 42% ABV. Mezcal Reviews' tasters were delightfully surprised: the cask mellowed the Joven's harsher edges into a richer texture, grape musk, caramel, and light smoke with a mildly sweet finish — the only reposado mezcal one had tried, and good neat or in an Oaxaca Old Fashioned; another found the six months faint and wondered what the point was. Expect apple skin, agave sugar, and a whisper of Bordeaux over the Joven's smoke. Honest note: reposado mezcal divides purists, and this one is subtle by design — a curiosity for the wine drinker and the Sombra fan. For an Oaxaca Old Fashioned, a mezcal Manhattan, or neat. The shadow, in claret wood.
