Tanteo Jalapeno Tequila
Tanteo Jalapeño is the original spicy tequila — 100% agave blanco infused with hand-cut fresh jalapeños, from the only tequila distillery owned by a cooperative of agave farmers. Tanteo launched in 2007 as the first pepper-infused tequila and is made in Juanacatlán, in the hills between the highlands and the valley, at a distillery owned and operated by a cooperative of eighty-five farming families who get a fair price for their agave; every bottle is distilled, infused, and bottled by hand, and Tanteo invented Spicy Margarita Week. The Jalapeño is 100% blue Weber agave, traditionally cooked, open-air fermented, small-batch distilled, then macerated with fresh, locally grown jalapeños chosen for age and heat, and bottled at 40% ABV. The house: fresh green-pepper notes with minerality and faint agave sweetness, then fresh and aged jalapeño mingling with the agave, a vegetal mid-palate of cucumber, green pea, and honeysuckle. Drinkhacker, comparing the line, found the Jalapeño has the south-of-the-border nuance the Habanero trades for raw heat; USA Spirits Ratings gave it Silver. Honest note: this is the bottle behind most of the spicy Margaritas in America — real peppers, real green flavor, and a manageable heat — and the one to keep beside the Cointreau. In a Spicy Margarita, a Paloma, or a Ranch Water. Tanteo, jalapeño.
