Tequila Ocho Single Estate Extra Anejo Las Presas 2018
Las Presas 2018 is an Ocho Extra Añejo from the field that belonged to Carlos Camarena's great-grandfather — the dams, at 7,100 feet, rows oriented north to south, harvested in 2018 and aged more than three years in ex-American whiskey barrels. Camarena, the third-generation tequilero of La Alteña, created Ocho in 2008 with the late Tomas Estes on the wine-world idea that agave tastes of where it grows; every bottle names the rancho, the harvest year, and the elevation, and it's made at NOM 1474 in Arandas from 100% highland blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in stone ovens, crushed by tahona, fermented with wild yeast in open wooden vats, and double-distilled in copper. The house says the 2018 Las Presas harvest produced tequila with citrus notes of ripe mandarin and burnt orange zest; the extra añejo profile is cherries, red fruit, oak, cinnamon, and spice on the nose, then sweetness, toasted oak, anise, almond, herbs, black pepper, and minerality — bottled at 40% ABV, additive-free. Sip Tequila, on the house's extra añejo: vanilla, toasted almond, caramel, split timber, and dry roasted chile, then roasted agave, sweet potato, dried fruit, honey butter, cinnamon, and clove. Honest note: a single-field, single-year extra añejo from a family plot — collector's tequila with a real story, and gone when it's gone. Neat, in a copita, slowly. Las Presas, 2018.
