Tomintoul Peaty Tang is the smoky exception at "the gentle dram," the Speyside distillery founded in 1964 near Scotland's highest village and owned by Angus Dundee Distillers. Made from peated malt in a region that almost never uses smoke, it gives Tomintoul's soft, fruity spirit a gentle campfire edge, bottled at 80 proof.
The nose brings smoky peat intertwined with zesty citrus and gentle spice, then a palate where smoldering peat meets the tang of juicy orange and lemon zest with warm spice and oak underneath, finishing long and lightly smoky. Softer than Islay but more characterful than most Speysiders, it is an easy introduction to peated whisky, a fine base for a smoky highball and one of the most affordable peated single malts on the shelf.
