Woodford Reserve Master's Collection No. 21 Sweet Oak Bourbon Whiskey
Master's Collection No. 21, Sweet Oak, is Woodford Reserve bourbon aged entirely in chinquapin oak — a rare white oak species with more sweetness and a different grain than standard barrel wood — bottled at 110.4 proof, and Breaking Bourbon rated it 4 out of 5. Woodford Reserve is Brown-Forman's showpiece distillery on Glenn's Creek in Versailles, Kentucky, distilling since 1812 on the site and running the only triple copper pot stills in bourbon; the Master's Collection is its annual experiment, one variable a year, twenty-one releases and counting, now under master distiller Elizabeth McCall. Sweet Oak takes Woodford's 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% malted barley bourbon and ages it start to finish in chinquapin barrels, then bottles at 110.4 proof — the highest-proof Master's Collection bourbon in years. Breaking Bourbon: oak, burning leaves, leather, brown sugar, cinnamon popcorn, dark raisin, and light caramel on the nose; spiced cherry, rye spice, cinnamon stick, charred oak, vanilla pudding, spiced raisin, and chocolate syrup on the palate; and a finish of chocolate, dry oak, leather, green peppercorn, sweet dark grape, and vanilla powder. Honest note: Heaven Hill and Woodford both went to chinquapin in 2025, and Woodford's is the one at real proof — for the Master's Collection completist and the drinker who wants to taste what a different oak species does with everything else held constant. Neat, a drop of water. Master's Collection No. 21, Sweet Oak.
