Chamucos was conceived in 1992 by Oscar-nominated Mexican film director Antonio Urrutia and his friend César Hernández, a hand-blown glass artist; the chamucos are the dark, shadowy creatures of Mexican folklore who visit briefly in dreams, and they dance across a recycled-glass bottle whose cut-out label folds into a three-dimensional piece. The Reposado is 100% organic Los Altos highland agave, cooked, fermented, distilled in a custom stainless alembic, rested in a combination of new American and new French oak barrels, and bottled at 40% ABV; the brand has moved distilleries over the years — NOM 1433, 1414, 1558, and 1586 — so check your bottle, and Agave Matchmaker's tasters found the older 1414 lots bolder and more nuanced.
