El Mayor is four generations of González distillers: master distiller Rodolfo runs Destiladora González Lux, NOM 1603, in the Los Altos highlands with his son Paul and daughter Graciela, growing estate agave at 7,500 feet in sandy, mineral soil; Luxco distributes it, which is why it's priced like a house brand and made like an estate one. The Extra Añejo is 100% estate-grown highland blue Weber agave, fermented with the family yeast, double-distilled in stainless pots with copper coils, aged more than three years in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, and bottled at 40% ABV. Drinkhacker treats each year's El Mayor extra-aged release as a treat from the tequila pros; Tastings' 93 came in 2023. Expect a deep amber pour with a nose of caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and dried fruit with cooked agave and the family's baking-spice signature, opening into a rich, smooth palate of butterscotch, cinnamon, cocoa, and soft oak with a long, warm finish.
