Reserva de la Familia is the world's first extra añejo — the Cuervo family's private reserve, kept secret for ten generations and released in 1995 for the 200th anniversary of the first tequila license, in a wooden box a different Mexican artist designs every year. José María Guadalupe Cuervo got that license in 1795, and La Rojeña, NOM 1122, in the town of Tequila is the oldest working distillery in the Americas; Reserva is made apart from the rest of the house, in copper pot stills rather than columns, from eight-to-ten-year organic agave grown in the estate's richest volcanic soil, using only the sweetest inner heart, roasted seventy-two hours in masonry ovens. The Extra Añejo is aged more than three years in small new American and French oak barrels charred at different levels, married with family reserves aged up to thirty years, blended by master distiller Alex Coronado, and hand-bottled, numbered, wax-sealed with the family crest, and boxed at 40% ABV; it took Double Gold at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
