Lunazul Anejo Tequila
Lunazul Añejo is aged twelve to eighteen months in used bourbon and French oak barrels — Spirits Review says it could pass for a young Cognac by its dark color. Francisco Beckmann, former co-owner of Jose Cuervo, founded Tierra de Agaves in 2002 to make 100% agave tequila at a price everyone could afford; the Beckmanns are the oldest tequila dynasty in Mexico, the estate sits just outside the town of Tequila with agave lineage dating to 1758, and eighth-generation Jorge Beckmann runs it today with master tequilero Francisco Quijano; Heaven Hill brings it north. The Añejo is 100% estate-grown blue Weber agave, seven to nine years old, hand-harvested, cooked, double-distilled in copper alembics, aged twelve to eighteen months in used bourbon and French oak barrels — real barrels, Spirits Review notes, not the room-sized vats commercial houses use — and bottled at 40% ABV. Total Wine: amber, clean, with subtle fruit, smoky white oak, and vanilla spice. Expect a nose of cooked agave, vanilla, toasted oak, and dried fruit, opening into a smooth, rounded palate of caramel, oak, and light spice with a warm, moderately long finish. Honest note: an añejo that costs what most blancos do, from a real estate distillery — the whiskey drinker's cheapest honest way into aged tequila. Neat, on the rocks, or a tequila Old Fashioned. Blue moon, aged.
