Lunazul Primero Cristalino Tequila

Lunazul Primero is an eighteen-month añejo filtered clear — the Beckmann estate's cristalino, and Spirits Review calls it a very interesting, complex, slightly odd tequila in the best way. Francisco Beckmann, former co-owner of Jose Cuervo, founded Tierra de Agaves in 2002 to make 100% agave tequila at a price everyone could afford; the Beckmanns are the oldest tequila dynasty in Mexico, the estate sits just outside the town of Tequila with agave lineage dating to 1758, and eighth-generation Jorge Beckmann runs it today with master tequilero Francisco Quijano; Heaven Hill brings it north. Primero — the first — is 100% estate-grown blue Weber agave, seven to nine years old, cooked, double-distilled in copper alembics, aged eighteen months in American white oak, then filtered to remove the color while keeping the barrel's vanilla, and bottled at 40% ABV; the Primero line has since grown into a premium collection, with the Humoso named one of IWSC's two Tequilas of the Year in 2024. Expect a nose of cooked agave, vanilla, honey, and a faint toasted oak, opening into a smooth, gently sweet palate of agave, caramel, and light spice with a clean finish and no color to give the age away. Honest note: cristalino divides purists, and this is the cheapest honest way into the category — an eighteen-month añejo at a reposado price, from a real estate distillery.
