Terralta Extra Añejo is Felipe Camarena's well-water tequila aged more than three years in used bourbon barrels — G4's sibling from El Pandillo, additive-free, and one of the cheapest honest extra añejos from a top-tier distillery. Camarena is the fourth generation of the family behind El Tesoro and Tapatío; he built El Pandillo, NOM 1579, in Jesús María in 2011 with his sons and makes Terralta — high land — alongside G4 with the same estate agave, the same stone ovens, and the same handmade Felipestein tahona, the difference being deep-well water in place of G4's rainwater blend. The Extra Añejo is 100% estate highland blue Weber agave, slow-roasted 22 hours in stone ovens, crushed by the metal tahona, fermented with the family's agave yeast, double-distilled in copper, aged more than three years in the house's old bourbon barrels, and bottled at 40% ABV, additive-free. Expect a nose of cooked agave, vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak with dried fruit and the El Pandillo minerality, opening into a rounded, layered palate of butterscotch, leather, baking spice, and agave with a long, warm finish that never turns into whiskey. Honest note: three years of oak from one of the most respected distilleries in Mexico without a decanter markup — for the whiskey drinker who wants to still taste agave, and the G4 fan who wants the value version. Neat, in a Glencairn, after dinner. High land, extra aged.
