Green River is the revival of Owensboro's 1885 distillery — DSP-KY-10, the tenth license in Kentucky — and this is its flagship: five-plus-year straight bourbon at 90 proof for the price of a mixer. The Green River name dates to 1885, when J.W. McCulloch built the distillery on the Ohio River in Owensboro; the site made whiskey for a century under other names, was bought and rebuilt in 2014, laid down its first new barrels in 2016 under master distiller Jacob Call — whose family has distilled in Kentucky for generations — and was bought by Bardstown Bourbon Company in 2022. The Straight Bourbon is 70% corn, 21% winter rye, and 9% malted barley, aged more than five years in new charred oak, and bottled at 90 proof. Breaking Bourbon: brown sugar and caramel with crème brûlée, butterscotch, and leather on the nose; caramel cream candy and dark brown sugar into mixed nuts, dark fruit, and herbal florals on a silky palate; and a finish of herbal dark fruit, leather, oak, rye spice, and a roasted aftertaste — an approachable smooth-sipping bourbon for everyday.
