Hancock's President's Reserve is the fourth bourbon from Buffalo Trace's high-rye Mashbill #2 — the same recipe as Blanton's, Elmer T. Lee, and Rock Hill Farms — bottled from a single barrel at a curious 88.9 proof. It's named for Hancock Lee, who founded the Leestown settlement on the Kentucky River in 1775, the landing that became a shipping port for tobacco, hemp, and whiskey and eventually the site of Buffalo Trace. Hancock's is Mashbill #2 — corn with 12 to 15% rye and malted barley — aged in Buffalo Trace's warehouses, dumped one barrel at a time, and bottled at 88.9 proof with no age statement; it dates to the Ancient Age era and has outlived most of the brands it launched beside. Breaking Bourbon: hay and light oak with vanilla, cinnamon, and peach on the nose; cinnamon and vanilla against tannic oak and black pepper on a lighter palate; and a finish of dry oak, leather, peppercorn, vanilla, and butterscotch.
