Joseph Magnus Bourbon is triple-finished — Oloroso sherry, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and Cognac casks — by Nancy Fraley, the blender behind some of the most respected finished whiskeys in America, at 100 proof. Joseph A. Magnus was a Cincinnati distiller whose 1892 bourbon vanished with Prohibition; his great-grandson Jimmy Turner found a century-old bottle, had it analyzed, and relaunched the brand in Washington, D.C. in 2015 with Fraley recreating the profile. The Bourbon is well-aged Indiana and Kentucky straight bourbon, finished in Oloroso, PX, and Cognac casks in proportions Fraley adjusts by batch, and bottled at 100 proof; the brand moved to Coppercraft in Holland, Michigan in 2020. Paste: waves of plum and fig fruitiness with deep maltiness, the finishing barrels bringing an oxidized nuttiness rather than sweetness. District Drams and The Whiskey Shelf both note the sherry as dried fruit and walnut over a caramel bourbon core, with the Cognac lending grape and a long, dry, spiced finish.
