Arbikie Batch-22 1794 Highland Rye Single Grain Scotch Whisky
Scotland stopped making rye whisky for over a century — and Arbikie brought it back. The Stirling family has farmed Arbikie Estate on the Angus coast near Arbroath for four generations, and the land was first recorded as a farm distillery in 1794, which is where the name comes from. Brothers John, Iain, and David reopened distilling in 2013 in a converted barn a stone's throw from their fields, building the first single-site, field-to-bottle distillery in Scotland — every grain grown on the estate, distilled, matured, and bottled there, with master distiller Kirsty Black, named among the world's top ten female master distillers, running the stills. Highland Rye is the world's only rye Scotch whisky. This 1794 release uses a mash bill of roughly 60% winter-harvested Arbikie rye, 25% spring malted barley, and 15% winter wheat, copper pot distilled and matured entirely in new charred American oak with no finishing cask, bottled at 48% ABV (96 proof) as Batch 22. Expect forest berries, black tea, and caramel on the nose with fresh oak and green country air, opening into a spice-driven palate of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and dried chili over jammed fruit, vanilla, and barrel char, finishing long and warm. Reviewers describe it as lighter and less cloying than American rye — Forbes gave it a 9 out of 10, and Whisky Unplugged called it an eye-opener for where Scottish rye could go.
