1787 Provenance Small Batch comes from Middleburg Barrel Company, a Virginia whiskey brand founded in 2025 by Viyas Sundaram (also behind The Bourbon Concierge) alongside Principal Whiskeymaker Jay West — better known in the whiskey world as T8ke, a former critic who reviewed over a thousand expressions before shifting to blending and barrel selection himself. Unlike Provenance's single-barrel releases, which bottle one hand-selected cask at a time, this Small Batch expression blends together multiple barrels of Kentucky-distilled bourbon, aged further in newly built rickhouses on the 121-acre Provenance Estate in Middleburg, Virginia. West's approach favors big, layered flavor — the brand's other releases lean toward baking spice, toffee, dried fruit, and dark chocolate — brought together here into a more approachable, consistent pour than a single barrel can offer, while still avoiding the added sugar and coloring shortcuts some larger brands rely on.
