The Funk comes from Proof and Wood Ventures, the outfit behind Redemption Rye and Deadwood Whiskey, and it does something almost nobody else does in the US market: an unaged, pot still Jamaican rum. Most Jamaican rum on American shelves arrives dark, aged, blended, and heavily sugared — this is the opposite. Distilled at Worthy Park Estate in St. Catherine Parish, the operation founded in 1670 that resumed distilling in 2005 on a new Forsyth pot still, and bottled at 100 proof, it's a pure look at what Jamaican fermentation actually produces before wood gets involved. Worthy Park runs fermentations of two to three weeks for its highest-ester marks, and no dunder pits — which gives its funk a different character from Hampden's banana-forward style. Expect the classic tropical and earthy Jamaican profile: overripe fruit, banana, pineapple, cane, and a pungent, unmistakable hogo running through everything.
