Roaming Road is the independent bottling project of Mike Gilmore, who left a career in law enforcement to buy a remote liquor store — Country Lane Liquor in Pinedale, Wyoming — in 2007, and quietly built it into a destination for single-barrel enthusiasts. His 2016 selection of a 13-year Four Roses OESO barrel won top prize at a charity tasting and made his name among serious pickers, but as the American whiskey market drowned in single-barrel bourbon, Gilmore looked elsewhere. Roaming Road launched in September 2024 under the philosophy "We Go Where The Spirit Takes Us," debuting with nine single-cask rums from Venezuela, Jamaica, Belize, Guyana, Australia, Barbados, and Panama, aged 8 to 20 years, all bottled at cask strength — with French brandies, Irish whiskey, and Armagnac following. Every release is a genuine one-off capped at 250 bottles, never repeated. Gilmore spends months each year on the road visiting distilleries and rack houses to hand-select each cask, and Drinkhacker's blind tasting of the initial rums praised the range for genuinely tasting like the places they came from. Whiskey writer Fred Minnick has profiled it as one of the more distinctive independent bottlers to emerge in years — a serious answer for drinkers tired of the endless allocated-bourbon chase.
