Oak Cross takes its name from the two oaks that shape it: American oak bourbon barrels and French oak. Compass Box, the London blending house founded by John Glaser in 2000, marries Highland single malts, then gives part of the blend extra maturation in custom casks with toasted French oak heads, the same technique that powers its famous Spice Tree, in a lighter touch.
Bottled at 86 proof, non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, Oak Cross is elegant and layered: vanilla and honey from the American oak, clove and gentle spice from the French, with orchard fruit, malt and a faint whisper of smoke underneath. Drinkhacker graded it an A- and called it an excellent value, likening its style to a far pricier Highland Park 18. A refined everyday malt and a great introduction to the Compass Box house style.
