Down Island Spirits Brazil 2011 Rum
Down Island Spirits is an independent rum bottler founded by Mike Streeter that releases single casks without sweetening, and this bottling comes from Epris, a Brazilian distillery whose rum turns up only rarely outside the country. It was distilled on a column still in 2011 and aged for 12 years before being bottled in 2023 from cask #VX4-05 A, at full cask strength of 55.1% ABV (110.2 proof). What makes it unusual is the wood: Epris rum is aged in amburana, the native Brazilian hardwood better known from aged cachaça, which gives spirits a distinctive warm, spicy, cinnamon-and-vanilla character very different from American oak. Down Island released it alongside its Saint James agricole as the first additions to its original four bottlings, and it's a good introduction to how Brazilian cane spirit and Brazilian wood behave together over a long maturation. Tasters on RumX pick out brown sugar and wood, with baking spice noted on the sister cask. As a single cask, the outturn is small. Sip it neat, then try it with a few drops of water to open up the spice at this strength.
