Epoch Jerry Thomas Edition Rye Whiskey is the cocktail-focused rye from Baltimore Spirits Company, named for the 19th-century bartender known as the father of American mixology, who wrote the first bartender's guide in 1862 when Maryland rye was the whiskey behind most classic drinks. Baltimore Spirits revived that tradition with Epoch, the first rye distilled in Baltimore City in more than 75 years.
This edition is made from 100% rye grain, including 25% malted rye, and is double copper-pot distilled in the style of a single malt, a near-extinct production method from the 1800s rye era. It is aged more than two years in first-use charred American oak and bottled at 100 proof. The malted rye gives it bright tropical-fruit notes on top of the natural rye spice, which makes it especially good in stirred drinks like a Manhattan or a Sazerac where a bottled-in-bond-strength rye keeps its character. Baltimore Spirits counts four gold medals in international competitions for this bottling.
