Fee Brothers Orgeat Cordial Syrup
Fee Brothers Orgeat Cordial Syrup comes from the Rochester, New York family company that got through Prohibition by making cordial syrups, a line that at the time included flavors meant to stand in for Benedictine, Chartreuse, rum, brandy and crème de menthe. The Fee family business goes back to an 1840s butcher shop and a wine and liquor store opened in 1864 (the label says 1863, a grandfather's preference for his limerick), moved into cocktail mixers in the 1950s, and is now run by the fourth generation, Joe and Ellen Fee. Orgeat is the almond syrup of classic tiki and French café drinks, and Fee's version is a non-alcoholic cordial flavored with almond and orange flower; the producer describes a sweet, nutty almond flavor with a subtle hint of citrus in a light syrup. It is kosher and vegan. The obvious use is the Mai Tai, with aged rum, lime and orange curaçao, and it belongs in a Scorpion, a Fog Cutter, a Japanese Cocktail or an Army & Navy as well. Outside the bar it works in lemonade, iced tea, coffee and Italian sodas. Sold in the 12.7 oz bottle.
