Founders Brewing Espresso KBS Stout
Founders Espresso KBS was the first official variant of KBS, the bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout from Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and it launched the brewery's 2020 Barrel-Aged Series. Standard KBS is brewed with coffee and chocolate and aged in bourbon barrels in the old gypsum mines beneath Grand Rapids. For this version, the beer comes out of the barrels and then rests on espresso beans roasted by Ferris Coffee & Nut, a Grand Rapids neighbor of the brewery, pushing the coffee further forward. Brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki explained the idea simply: coffee was already at the heart of the beer, so amplifying it made sense. It's 12% ABV. The first release hit the Grand Rapids taproom in November 2019 before rolling out across Founders' distribution through the winter, and fans pushed it back into the lineup as a returning release. Expect the dense chocolate, bourbon, and roast of KBS with a fresh, dark espresso character on top. Let it warm a few degrees out of the fridge and pour it into a snifter, and it pairs naturally with chocolate desserts or a strong cheese.
