This is Glenfarclas 105, the bottling that started the cask strength category. Glenfarclas is a family-owned independent distillery in Ballindalloch, Speyside, run by the Grant family since 1865 and known for maturing almost exclusively in ex-sherry casks. The 105 began as a private habit: former chairman George S. Grant would select single casks at natural strength to give as Christmas gifts, and they proved so popular that in 1968 Glenfarclas became the first distillery to put a cask strength single malt into its core range. The name refers to its strength of 105 British proof, which works out to 60% ABV, the figure on the label today. There's no age statement and no added coloring, and the deep color comes from the sherry wood. The Whisky Exchange describes a complex, oaky nose of apples and pears with dark toffee sweetness; a dry, assertive palate that quickly opens into rich spice, oak and sherried fruit; and a finish that is remarkably smooth for the strength, warming and rounded with a lingering hint of smoke, with Christmas cake, licorice root, prunes and dates running underneath. Add water a few drops at a time and it keeps opening up.
