MacNair's Lum Reek 12 Year Old is a small-batch peated blended malt from Billy Walker, the master distiller behind GlenAllachie and the man who revived BenRiach and GlenDronach. "Lum reek" is old Scots for a smoking chimney, from the toast "lang may yer lum reek," and the recipe marries peated Islay single malts with unpeated Speyside malts including aged GlenAllachie.
Matured at the GlenAllachie distillery in first-fill bourbon, Pedro Ximénez and red wine casks and bottled at 92 proof, non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, in a 700mL bottle, its bronze spirit reveals sweet peat reek, warming mocha, Scottish heather and butterscotch, with a long, gently smoky finish. It has won Double Gold at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Best Blended Malt under 12 Years at the 2020 World Whiskies Awards and Gold at the 2021 Scotch Whisky Masters. A sophisticated, sherry-touched smoky blend at a fair price.
