Plantation Fiji Islands 2009 Rum
Plantation, now renamed Planteray, is the rum brand of Maison Ferrand, the Cognac house of Alexandre Gabriel, which buys aged rum from distilleries across the tropics and gives it a second maturation in its own cellars in the Charente. The Vintage Edition series puts a single distillery and a single year on the label, and this one comes from the South Pacific Distillery in Lautoka on the island of Viti Levu, the only rum distillery in Fiji. The rum was distilled in 2009 from molasses on a combination of pot and column stills, then aged eight and a half years in ex-bourbon casks in Fiji's humid climate before crossing to France for two more years in Ferrand's Cognac casks, and bottled at 44.8% ABV. The Fijian spirit carries some of the same ester-driven fruitiness that Jamaican rum is known for, and tasters describe butterscotch and caramel, pineapple, pear, dried fruit, leather and smoky wood, with a light touch of glue-like ester on the nose and a spicy, drying finish; some have compared it to a softer Hampden. A mid-weight, gently funky sipper, and an easy way into Fijian rum before the price of the single casks.
