Loft & Bear Artisanal White Rum

Loft & Bear was founded in the summer of 2012 by Paul Ryan Elliott, a University of North Carolina graduate from the East Coast, and it became the first Black-owned distillery in California. The company started out making vodka in a downtown Los Angeles loft and, after a decade of growth, moved into an 8,600-square-foot distillery in South Los Angeles, where lead distiller Giovanni Machorro, who learned the craft from Elliott, runs production. The Artisanal White Rum is built on Louisiana blackstrap molasses, fermented and distilled low and slow, and run through a pot still in a single pass. Nothing is recycled into the spirit: Loft & Bear does not re-distill heads or tails back into the batch, which keeps the rum clean without stripping out its molasses character. It's bottled at 40% ABV, gluten-free, and the brand is both Black- and Hispanic-owned. Published tasting notes describe an earthy nose with delicate fruit, a palate of green caramelized plantain with a slightly viscous texture and bright mouthfeel, and a long, smooth finish with light lingering heat.
